Tina Penman, AuD, serves Veterans in the VA Northern California Healthcare System as the progressive tinnitus management manager. During her time in this role, she has empowered over 1,000 Veterans to live well with tinnitus, fostered an ongoing collaboration with the behavioral health team through an interprofessional team effort, and collaborated with peers to brainstorm creative individualized plans for their patients with tinnitus. Previously she served as a research audiologist at the National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research (NCRAR) at the VA Portland Health Care System in Portland, Oregon (2011-2020). She led the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense (DoD) Tinnitus Working Group, a team of clinicians and researchers committed to the implementation of evidence-based practices for patients with tinnitus. She contributed to research studies involving best practices for tinnitus care, auditory effects of speech-in-noise for the aging and hearing-impaired populations, and longitudinal effects of diabetes on hearing loss.
Dr. Penman served as an adjunct assistant professor in the Speech and Hearing Sciences Department at Portland State University (2016-2019) and in the School of Audiology at Pacific University (2019-2020). Inspiring undergraduate, post-bachelor, and graduate students was so rewarding that she pursued the Certificate of Innovation in College Teaching through Portland State University, and was one of the first professors at Portland State to complete the program (2018). She has presented over 35 times on topics pertaining to teaching and learning in digital spaces, the role of social media in the field, and skydiving noise levels, earning the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) Communication Fellowship (2017). Dr. Penman continues to volunteer on various committees for the American Academy of Audiology, and currently serves as program chair for the 2025 Joint Defense Veterans Audiology Conference and as associate editor for Frontiers: Blockchain in Science.
Dr. Penman received her bachelor of science in behavioral neuroscience (2006) and Clinical Doctorate in Audiology (2010) from Northeastern University. She was awarded 5 under 40 for Healthcare by Portland Business Journal (2018), Delta Zeta Sorority’s 35 Under 35 (2018), and Perry Hall High School Alumni Hall of Fame (2014). Outside of audiology, Dr. Penman is incredibly proud of her partner and toddler who make her laugh daily. She lives a healthy lifestyle and she thrives from contagious energy from the community at Orangetheory Fitness.
