As an ABA board member and an audiology preceptor for almost 10 years, the fall season is always an exciting time for me. Not only are the pumpkins appearing and the leaves changing, but the externship application and interview process is happening! As a regular participant in my hospital’s externship interview committee, fall is always a great reminder that the future of audiology is BRIGHT.  There is nothing that brings me more joy than reviewing all the accomplishments and novel ideas our future audiologists bring to the table. Here at ABA, we recognize the importance of supporting our future audiologists and new professionals. Being present and involved at the annual SAA conference allows ABA to connect with students and gain knowledge of their needs and goals as the future of audiology. We also continue to actively work to build new tools and helpful resources for our new professionals.

One of our big projects this year has been to compile a “New Professionals Toolkit.” This toolkit has all the information a new audiologist would need in one place. You can find licensing information by state, information on certificate and certification programs, and opportunities for involvement. Stay tuned for the final version of our toolkit, to be presented at the SAA conference in New Orleans on March 26, 2025. It will surely be a helpful resource and time saver for our new professionals, as entering into a new career can be quite overwhelming.

In closing, enjoy your fall season and sip your pumpkin spice latte knowing that the future of our profession is in very capable hands!

Now is the time to begin planning to take the Pediatric Audiology Specialty Certification (PASC) exam in spring 2025. Consider becoming Board Certified in Pediatric Audiology to set yourself apart in your profession and workplace. Applications for the spring 2025 exams must be completed and submitted by March 11, 2025 to qualify to register for the 2025 exam, which will be administered May 4-18. Registration for the exam will end April 8, 2025. Here are links to PASC application information and exam information. The exam pass rate for first-time test takers in 2024 was 81.5 percent.

Leen Nahouli, AuD, in Galveston, Texas passed the PASC exam in 2024. “I was challenged and motivated to take this test after a few years of working with the pediatric population,” Leen said. “I challenged myself to go the extra mile and prove my skills within my team and profession. I have learned a lot more about the pediatric population than I thought I had.”

Sarah McAlexander, AuD, in Houston, Texas, who also passed the PASC exam in 2024, agreed. “As a pediatric audiologist and new professional, it was important to me that I seek out every opportunity to provide the best possible care for my patients and their families. Earning my certification in pediatric audiology validates the immense amount of time I have put into educating myself on current research and best practices in pediatrics, and signals to my families that I am motivated to continue to learn and grow in order to best support their child.”

Although ABA receives and reviews PASC applications year-round, we are seeing an increase in applications as more pediatric audiologists consider benchmarking their skills by sitting for the exam. If you have a colleague who you think might be a good candidate for the PASC certification, please pass this on to them.

First, a warm welcome to new ABA Board members Annie Hayden, AuD, Brianna Kuzbyt, AuD, and Trent Westrick, AuD! Resounding thanks to Rebecca Lewis, AuD, PhD, Sandra Gabbard, PhD, and Todd Landsberg, AuD, for their time on the ABA Board. While these amazing volunteers are leaving the board, most are moving on to other positions within the Academy to continue their outstanding work on behalf of audiologists. I would like to personally extend heartfelt gratitude to Kristin Samuelson, AuD, for her work as chair of ABA this last year. Her leadership has been exceptional and has created a strong platform for ABA to move ahead, creating new and meaningful certificate and certification options for audiologists.

As the new chair of ABA, I see many opportunities ahead. In 2024, the Academy and ABA began working together to create a new board certification in vestibular audiology. This new program is underway with a Development Task Force creating the framework for this certification and an Oversight Committee to guide the implementation of the program. A proposal for a certificate in educational audiology is also under consideration.

I have been an audiologist for over 35 years, and I don’t think there has ever been a more challenging or exciting time to be an audiologist than right now. Please consider a certificate or certification from ABA, which allows you to stay up-to-date with the constant changes in audiology while demonstrating a commitment to your own professional excellence. I look forward to working with all of you. Thank you for this opportunity to lead the ABA.

Hello! It is my hope that you are finding some ways to rest and recharge this summer. Here in Phoenix, we are facing another weekend of 115-degree temperatures, so we are just looking for ways to cool off! As an educational audiologist, I am just heading back to school, energized and ready to get back to a job that I love, making sure the students hear their teachers.

I also hope that you have had some time in the past couple of weeks to follow some of the pageantry, excitement and competition of the Olympic Games in Paris! I always appreciate the way the nations come together to embrace and celebrate these incredible athletes. One aspect of the Olympics that I enjoy is watching the torch be passed from country to country, well before the games begin, symbolizing the transition from the previous host city to the current one.

At the ABA, the summer also marks a transition of leadership, as our new year of service on the board begins in October. Therefore, this will be my last chair message to you, as I “pass the torch” to the very capable hands of my friend and colleague, Carrie Meyer, AuD. You will enjoy and appreciate her energetic and thoughtful leadership.

I am pleased to reflect on all that was accomplished by the ABA this past year. We were approved by the Academy Board of Directors to move forward with the development of a much-anticipated vestibular certification program, and we continue to improve upon our pediatric certification as well as the tinnitus management and preceptor certificates. A team of ambitious board members developed a series of “baseball cards” which highlight the requirements for audiology practice in each state. Also included are cards that help an individual present these requirements to preceptors and employers. Dr. Meyer and I had the pleasure of debuting these cards at the SAA Conference in Atlanta, and you can find a link to a digital version of each card on our website. Finally, we had the absolute pleasure of celebrating the 25th anniversary of the ABA Certified credential with some delicious treats and a lot of good friends at the Expo Hall in Atlanta in April 2024.

Thank you for remaining committed to the highest level of care in audiology. Together we are better, as we strive daily to improve the quality of life for the patients we serve. I look forward to another year on the ABA Board, as immediate past chair, beginning in October.

Best regards,

Kristin Samuelson, AuD, ABAC

Of the 31 exam candidates who took the Spring 2024 PASC Exam in May, 25 of the 31 passed the exam and are now Board Certified in Pediatric Audiology®. The pass rate for those taking the exam for the first time was 81.5 percent and we have added board-certified pediatric audiologists for the first time in British Columbia, Delaware, Michigan, and Nebraska. Fun fact: The state with the most board-certified pediatric audiologists is Colorado with 34, followed by Ohio with 12, and Texas with 11. Applications for the Spring 2025 Exam can be submitted online any time before March 11, 2025.

For those who hold ABA’s specialty certifications and put either Pediatric Audiology Specialty Certification (PASC) or Cochlear Implant Specialty Certification (CISC) behind their names on their business cards and websites, there is a new designation that more accurately describes your achievement and more closely aligns with other board certifications in allied health fields.

For those who hold the PASC credential, you may say you are Board Certified in Pediatric Audiology® and those who hold the CISC credential may say you are Board Certified in Cochlear Implants®. New logos have been developed to distinguish your achievement from the certification program itself and are available for use after returning a signed release form.

For those who are use using the current logos on their websites, you will automatically receive the new one.

The American Academy of Audiology Board of Directors has approved the ABA’s proposal for a new Vestibular Audiology Specialty Certification (VASC). This certification will provide additional education and training, and an opportunity for audiologists specializing in the assessment and treatment of patients with vestibular dysfunction, dizziness, and imbalance to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise through becoming Board Certified in Vestibular Audiology.

The ABA is forming an advisory committee to develop a more detailed plan for implementing and sustaining this new certification program. The ABA is seeking subject matter experts in vestibular audiology to consider eligibility requirements, approve an exam blueprint, assist with exam content development, and develop a marketing plan for the new certification. If you are an audiologist specializing in vestibular assessment, please consider volunteering for this project by completing this 15-minute survey by Monday, September 9. For more information, please contact Andrew Stafford at 703-226-1056 or astafford@audiology.org.

Hello! We have all had a few weeks to settle back into our respective work settings following the recent AAA 2024+HearTECH Expo in Atlanta, and I hope you feel as energized and excited about our profession as I find myself! I always return from the conference feeling refreshed and renewed, having learned so many new things that make me a better professional. At each conference, I enjoy the Grand Rounds presentations, Learning Modules, Industry Updates, and so much more, when it comes to learning and earning CEUs. But, also, when I reflect on my experience, I realize that valuable time at the AAA conference is time spent with colleagues…catching up with old friends and classmates, but also meeting new audiologists from different generations, geographical areas, and fields of expertise.

Each year at the AAA conference, I am reminded of what a diverse group we are as audiologists, and how many different hats we wear. At the Student Academy of Audiology Conference on Wednesday, Carrie Meyer and I had the pleasure of speaking about ABA certificates and certifications. We had the opportunity to meet students from all over the country, who are accomplished and enthusiastic about their new profession. On Friday morning, I facilitated a “coffee talk” roundtable discussion on educational audiology. There were also 19 other tables in the room, each led by an audiologist with a different expertise such as billing, student supervision, vestibular audiology, research, practice management, tinnitus, and more.

Audiologists come from all walks of life, and from all corners of the globe, but what I appreciate so much about the American Academy of Audiology is that we are one unifying organization, “of, by, and for audiologists.” Whether you are in academia, research, clinical audiology, pediatrics, geriatrics, vestibular audiology, hearing aids, industry, etc., the Academy is your professional home. The ABA, as an entity of the Academy, proudly offers the certificates and certifications that allow you to distinguish yourself as an audiologist who sets the bar higher.

Thank you for remaining committed to the highest level of care in audiology. Together we are better, as we strive daily to improve the quality of life for the patients we serve.

Best regards,

In 1927, the Federation of Organizations for the Hard of Hearing first established National Hearing Week. Later, in 1958, May became Better Hearing Month, a month-long opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role that speech pathologists and audiologists play in providing assessment and treatment. As the spring flowers bloom, let’s take this time to celebrate our history and to make our communities aware of the critical services we provide.
