2024 promises to be a busy year in politics and advocacy. During this presidential election year, the president and vice president will be elected, and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate will be up for grabs to determine the membership and the balance of power in the 119th Congress. Thirteen state and territorial governorships and numerous other state and local elections will also be decided.
The year also is starting off with a relatively new speaker of the House of Representatives. At the end of October 2023, Congressman Mike Johnson (R-LA) was elected as the new speaker of the House. This followed the unprecedented removal of Speaker Kevin McCarthy from office as a result of deep divisions within his own (Republican) party.
